How can I find the sustaining time of an electric guitar? The influence of other components besides the strings can be neglected. I need it for my term paper.

Ummm . . . measure it? There are phone apps for analyzing sound.

It seems to me it must be related to the following formula:

but I don't know how to find the damping time of the damped oscillations. I haven't found the corresponding formulae

Maybe you could start with a list of the things that dissipate energy from a vibrating mass (a string in this case).

Or an on-line search for "Damping Factor".
