TL;DR Summary
Holographic principle in continuous spacetime?
Can the holographic principle be applied to spacetimes and metrics that are (fundamentally) continuous/smooth? Or only to discrete ones?

Some interpretations of the holographic principle suggest that it could apply to both discrete and continuous spacetimes. In this view, the fundamental idea is not necessarily tied to the discreteness of spacetime but rather to the idea of encoding information about a volume in terms of its boundary. This could potentially apply to continuous spacetimes as well, although the precise mathematical formulation and implications in such cases are not yet fully understood. On the other hand, some researchers have explored versions of the holographic principle in the context of discrete or "emergent" spacetimes, where spacetime itself may be viewed as arising from more fundamental, discrete degrees of freedom. In these scenarios, the holographic principle could play a crucial role in understanding the fundamental structure of spacetime.
